Welcome back to The Pop Quiz at the End of the Universe, a recurring series here on Tor.com featuring some of our favorite science fiction and fantasy authors, artists, and others!
Born in 1974, Ayize Jama-Everett hails from the Harlem of old. He is the author of three novels—he self-published The Liminal People in 2010, and the next two novels in the series, The Liminal War and The Entropy of Bones, will be published this summer by Small Beer Press. He’s also written an upcoming graphic novel with illustrator John Jennings entitled Box of Bones. When he’s not writing, teaching, or sermonizing, he’s usually practicing his aim.
Join us to find out Ayize’s ideal theme music—it makes us want to be his lifetime friend!
You wake up tomorrow morning as the antagonist in your book: what do you do to change the ending for yourself?
Not a damn thing. My antagonist always seem to do okay in the end. The cult of the hero is the cult of the dead.
If you could choose your own personal theme music to play every time you enter a room, what would you pick?
Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem’s “Can you picture that?” Kermit should have given the musical direction of the show over to the Doc years ago.
If you regenerated as a new Doctor, what would your signature outfit/accessory be?
Purple Nehru with three thick red stripes. Ash gray Doc Martin slacks with Ox blood red Doc Martin shoes. Vintage World War I Tar black Trench coat with giant scarlet Anarchy symbol painted on the back. Bandanna and a Vaporizer at hand at all times. My doctor smokes.
What would your Patronus/familiar be?
Lockheed—Kitty Pryde’s dragon from the Chris Claremont days of the X-Men. He’s like a fire breathing dog. How cool is that? Or Nightrunner, Cutter from Elfquest’s first wolf. I cried when he died.
If you had to choose one band or artist to provide the official soundtrack to your new book, who would it be?
I think about this all the time! For Entropy of Bones it would have to be a Master mix of the Old dirty Bastard, only because he’s referenced so much in it. For The Liminal War, these two are killing it for me right now!
